Many people don't bother learning how to setup their own guitars, they are quite happy to go and spend their hard earned dollar on getting a “professional” to go and do it. I found that when I did that I would end up giving it to some dude at a guitar shop who had no formal training and would just blag it. The majority of the time I received a good service but sometimes I just felt that I could do the same job and asked myself “why don't I do it”.
Also there are actually very few trained qualified guitar techs, especially if your not living in a major metropolis. I've found a few where I live who are generally touring guitar techs and if your lucky enough to know them then when they are home from tour its great to have friends like these. But if your not lucky enough to know a professional and If you do live in the sticks you don't want to have to travel with your guitars and pay a large amount of money to get your guitars set-up. Save your money learn how to setup your own guitar.
My main reason that I want to learn these skills is that I play my guitars regularly at home and thrash them live on stage a couple of times a month at least. I need to keep my guitars in top condition so I can enjoy playing them when I want to. Having to send my guitars to a tech for a set-up is just irritating. So know I wan to learn how to do this myself.
I can do this I'm no idiot, sure its a skilled job but not something that can't be learn't by everybody. So this is my aim. Over the next year I want to lean everything there is about guitar set-up and guitar repair. If this involves having to break a few guitars just to fix them I will. Nothing says rock n roll like smashing up a guitar! I want to be able to make a shit guitar sound great and with this blog I shall document my progress as well as use it to give valuable lessons I learn along the way.
